Saturday 23rd June

The weather is still terrible…rain, more rain and yet more rain.

The weather is the most discussed topic in the shop and today was no exception.

A customer (a star of stage and screen – more another day) was chatting about the weather and this prompted him to say he remembered when he was a small boy living in Shrewsbury there was a great flood in 1947.

He explained that Shrewsbury is circulated by the River Severn and he was taken shopping with his mother into town, lunching in Boots, and the river rose and cut off the town.

Lorries were brought in to ferry people through the water back to the outlying roads so they could get back home.

He remembers a lady carrying bags of groceries having to struggle to get up into the lorry.

She lost her balance and fell back into the water and the fruit and veg were bobbing about in the water.
