Wednesday signals a change to the ‘Sweet of the Week’.
For several months now we have had a sweet of the week in which we try to get customers to try (for free) a different sweet to encourage them to try some alternative to their regular confectionery.
It works quite well in that people try them especially when they are free and sometimes they like them enough to feel obliged to buy some.
Regulars manage to get though quite a few freebies in a week, especially Pete the Postie who has to call in twice a day – ‘one to now and one for the road’.
It’s quite surprising what people like/dislike.
Liquorice is an interesting one.
It could be Pontefract Cakes, Liquorice Torpedoes, Liquorice Toffee but people love it or hate it, a bit like marmite.
This week we are on Dew Drops, those sugar covered jellies you find in Dolly Mixtures.
We got through a few pot pulls of free samples today.
It is interesting to watch the customers as they nonchalantly wander across to the pot of sweets on the counter to help themselves.
Some older customers help themselves while most kids do ask first.
It was nearly a nice day today as it was quite sunny although it did let itself down later in the day when it chucked it down.
Even when it was sunny the typical British person said “It won’t last”.
I’m planning my weekend in Barcelona for next week so if you have any ideas let me know.
